He began a tour of duty in the Binh Duong province of Vietnam on 27 July 1969 as an infantry unit commander in A Company, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was wounded in action and died in a helicopter taking him to a medical facility on 24 October 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had married at the United States Military Academy, West Point, just a few months earlier in April 1969 and, at the time of his death, had been preparing to fly to Hawaii to be reunited with his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Lee Sackett was from Welch, West Virginia. He was the son of Frederick Milton Sackett and Dora Lee Kroger.
